Amazon.com Review Discover The Best of Hawaii Content from Frommer's Hawaii 2010 There’s no place on earth quite like this handful of sundrenched, mid-Pacific islands. The Hawaii of South Seas literature and Hollywood films really does exist. Here you’ll find palm-fringed blue lagoons, lush rainforests, hidden gardens, cascading waterfalls, wild rivers running through rugged canyons, and soaring volcanoes. And oh, those beaches—gold, red, black, and even green sands caressed by an endless surf. The possibilities for adventure—and relaxation—are endless. Each of the six main islands is separate, distinct, and infinitely complex. There’s far too much to see and do on any 2-week vacation, which is why so many people return to the Aloha State year after year. Unfortunately, even paradise has its share of stifling crowds and tourist schlock. If you’re not careful, your trip to Hawaii could turn into a nightmare of tourist traps selling shells from the Philippines, hokey faux culture like cellophane-skirted hula dancers, overpriced exotic drinks, and a 4-hour timeshare lecture before you get on that “free” snorkeling trip. That’s where this guide comes in. As a Hawaii resident, I can tell the extraordinary from the merely ordinary. This book will steer you away from the crowded, the overrated, and the overpriced—and toward the best Hawaii has to offer. No matter what your budget, this guide will help ensure that every dollar is well spent. Hawaii's Top Destinations by Category The Best Beaches | The Best Island Experiences | The Best of Natural Hawaii | The Best Golf Courses | The Best Luxury Hotels & Resorts | The Best Ways to Immerse Yourself in Hawaiian Culture |

I'm ready - when do we leave? March 7, 2010 C. Bayne (Phoenix, AZ United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I confess - I didn't read this whole book. Well, I didn't start at the front and read all the way to the end at any rate. First, I looked through the pictures and ooh-ed and aah-ed appropriately. Then I started reading some of the things about the various islands. Then I looked up the volcano - Kilauea. Then I turned to the front and read parts of the "Best of Hawaii". I paged through until I got to Part 4 - Suggested Hawaiian Itineraries - and read that entire chapter closely. It has weekly itineraries for each of the main islands. For every activity it suggests, it gives a page number to go to for more details. And then I played around looking at various chapters that go more in depth on each main island.
This book is presented in a logical manner. There's some good intro stuff (example: don't act like the locals aren't in the US. Hawaii IS United States!) that's good to know. There's a bit about time difference (neither Hawaii or Arizona, where I live, practice Daylight Savings - good to know). There's stuff about safety and driving and something called a "gold card", which offers discounts - important info there. And then you get to the fun stuff - the beaches, activities, shopping, lodging, culture, FOOD! (I can't wait to go to a fancy restaurant that proudly serves spam.)
No, I haven't been to Hawaii (yet!!) in order to make sure that all the information presented is correct. But the more I read, the closer that day gets. In fact, I might have to go a few times 'cause Oahu looks to be at least a week, and Maui is at least a week, and I want to see Kilauea while it's still going off! I mean, how many other "safe" volcanoes do you know about? (I mean the lava ones, not Yellowstone.)
*sigh* stupid recession. But until my bank account comes back, this book (and the Travel Channel) are a great source of information and imagination. And if those 6 lottery numbers ever come up my way, you can be sure that I'll be on a flight within a week, the Frommer's Hawaii guide firmly gripped.
This is a beautiful book laid out in an easy to understand format. Highly recommended, whether you have a vacation planned or not.
Makes me want to get back to the islands March 10, 2010 Eagle Vision (Southeastern United States) Having traveled to Hawaii, this book outlines many of the hotspots and day trips that my wife and I took from island hopping. This book is as close to having a tour guide than other books by the competition. Filled with full color photos and maps, as well as inserts highlighting cultural information and travel ideas, this book is one of the best guides that I have ever used for the State of Hawaii.
One of the most useful chapters is the first chapter, which covers the Best of Hawaii. However, this book suits users of any budget (economy, midgrade and high-end restaurants/destinations/shopping/resorts). Contact information, addresses and relevant cost information is outlined. A section for culture, language, and ideas for any type of tourist (i.e. singles, newlyweds, golfers, surfers, explorers, etc) will give the reader great insight. A pull out map is helpful for those road trips, whereas the book as a whole is a relatively compact book to carry in the beach bag or store in the rental car/limousine.
This guide has a little bit of everything, and enough to make you enjoy your stay.
Highly recommend.
Surprisingly good March 14, 2010 Michael Smith (Mountain View, CA USA) I'm not sure how valuable annual travel books are with the advent of the Internet nowadays. Hotels and restaurants can change quickly, and thanks to sites like Yelp and Google Maps, finding good places to eat and stay isn't difficult. But this one seems to still fit the bill nicely, yet, of course suffers from possibly getting out of date quickly.
For some perspective, I've been to Hawaii once (Kauai) so I am familiar with how things go there, so I thought it would be nice to take a look at this book to see what's available on the other islands. The included pullout map is of good quality, but not super detailed, on other hand, driving in Hawaii isn't too difficult. Better maps are located inside the book.
This book is also a very general look at Hawaii, in certain cases you might be better off picking up a book for the specific island(s) you are going to visit. It's divided into 10 chapters, with the first four having general information about Hawaii (and some good itinerary ideas -- hotels, tourist sites, food, etc.) for different budgets and needs. The second chapter has a good brief history as well, though something is equally available at Wikipedia. The other general chapters cover a lot of "good to know" stuff for visiting Hawaii, though much of it is geared for foreign travelers.
The individual chapters cover Oahu, The Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kauai. There are excellent detailed maps of parts of each island, as well a suggestions on the usual travel things (hotels, food, beaches, etc.) Price ranges are clearly noted for everything, so if you are a budget traveller, you'll find good options. Historical and nature opportunities feature nicely as well.
All in all, a surprising good book for browsing or if you're really planning on visiting Hawaii.
Informative and Comprehensive Guide To The Islands March 14, 2010 Avid Reviewer (San Jose, CA) I like the overall layout of the book. The first two chapters acquaint you with Hawaii by giving you a quick overview of the Islands - THE BEST OF HAWAII and HAWAII IN DEPTH.
(1) THE BEST OF HAWAII gives you a good birds eye view of Hawaii and lists all the places you might want to check out: beaches, nature, hotels and accommodations, and restaurants. (2) HAWAII IN DEPTH gives you a brief history, customs, and popular culture of Hawaii as well as snippets of interesting information about Hawaii.
The meat of the book is in chapters 3 through 10.
A chapter is devoted each to:
Oahu ("the gathering place")
Hawaii ("the big island")
Maui ("the valley isle")
Molokai ("the most hawaiian isle")
Lanai ("a different type of paradise")
Kauai ("the garden isle")
Each chapter is divided into sections such as:
o Orientation
o Getting Around
o Where To Stay
o Where To Dine
o Seeing The Sights
o Beaches
o Nature Hikes
o Outdoor Activities
o Orientation Tours
o Attractions
o Walking Tour
o Exploring The Island By Car
o Shopping
o After Dark
Each section seems to be very comprehensive. For example, it looks like they have a comprehensive - or very close to comprehensive - listing of accommodations, attractions and places to dine, etc. for each of the islands.
The color-coded squares for each chapter show up on the edge of the book so you can use these as tabs to easily locate a chapter.
The book includes a folded map of the islands (Maui, the big island, Oahu, Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, and Kauai) that you can detach from the book at the perforations. On my copy, part of the map is glue on to an adjacent page, so part of the map was ripped out when I attempted to tear it off the book.
The book contains plenty of maps - from street level to a general locality. It also has some pictures in full color of some of the places of interest.

Frommer's Hawaii 2010 is packed with information. If you're planning on heading over to Hawaii, Frommer's Hawaii is a well-organized, informative, and very comprehensive guide to the islands. Highly Recommended.
Great Guide to Hawaii March 15, 2010 Tiger (San Jose, CA) This is a good guide to Hawaii. It covers the islands well, and provides a lot of insight for planning your trip. The full-color pages really make a big difference, compared to other guides. It seems like they really took advantage of the full-color pages, as they include a photograph (or more) on nearly every page. With the photographs, it makes it a lot easier to be excited to go visit the place. The format of the book is well laid out, and it is readable and helpful. It has inspired me to take a trip to Hawaii.
The book has suggested itineraries and really helps to show you how to plan a really great vacation. I like how it is organized and how it shows you what is worthwhile doing while on vacation. It also points out where to get the best deals, good activites for kids, insider tips, and "special moments" experiences that will make memories, and calls out things that are not worth your time or money.
All in all, this book is a great resource for planning and taking your trip to Hawaii.
